He said recently that his son is a huge fan of none other than Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

I know eh?  The man has clearly immersed himself with all things Guyanese including, but not limited, to his wife.   Good to see that his kids also have dual citizenship.  Many Indo and Afro Guyanese who have immigrated abroad don't even bother to consider dual citizenship for their kids.

I think you're right Kwami.  He played against two of the greats of West Indies cricket in Ambi and Walsh.  They tormented him, especially Ambi all throughout his career.  But the man was tough steely type of cricketer and he relished the challenge of the two fast bowlers even though he didn't always get the better of them.  He was instrumental in the selection of guys like Hick, Hussain, Ramprakash, and Thorpe on the tour of the West Indies in 1994.  The press were clamouring for more experience for that tour in the form of Gower and Gooch.

But Atherton was of the view that if his "young Lions" could survive a tour of the West Indies by withstanding the ruthless West Indian pace, and making runs, they would surely develop the strength of character to make them into a future number one side.  As it were many of them had their techiques brutally exposed by West Indian pace and of course the humiliation in Trinidad being bowled out for 46.  But those same young guys came back strong and beat the Windies in Barbados for the first time 34 years with Atherton leading from the front.
