CRICKET ON EAST BANK DEMERARA GIVEN A BOOST

With two new sponsors on board, cricket on the East Bank Demerara is set to take off with a 20/20 Competition to be played immediately after Carifesta. This Competition is expected to attract some twelve teams and is scheduled to commence the first week in September. The sponsors are W&H Rambaran Marine and R&W Supermarket.

The cricket grounds at Farm, Providence, Diamond and Eccles will be used. While the ground at Diamond is match ready, some amount of work will be done at the other venues in order to also have them match ready.

Additionally, clubs / teams from the East Bank will be invited to participate in the upcoming Guyana Cricket Board Nationwide Second-Division 20/20 Competition and the Hand-in-Hand Second-Division 50-Over Competition. Also, a squad of under-17 players will be selected to commence preparation for either a possible Demerara Inter-Association Under-17 Competition or trials towards selecting the Demerara Team for the 2008 Clico Inter-County Under-17 Competition.

It is expected that these Competitions will contribute towards the revival of cricket on the East Bank Demerara.

East Bank cricket used to be good in the early 70s.  Bacchus is the biggest name that played there before he joined GCC,  Claude St John was a tough allrounder even Basil Butcher in his later years played East Bank cricket after setting up his business in Mackenzie  and playing for MSC

Totaram  Bishun who played in the regional u19 competition and his litle brother are two of East Bank current players.
Claude St John is now a coach, and  another former player now umpire Andrew Allen organises school cricket there.
BTW these guys work without pay and very little recognition.

East Bank and Georgetown open with U-17 victories
EAST Bank and Georgetown opened with wins as play in the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Inter-Association Under-17 50 overs competition got under way yesterday at the Everest and Wales cricket grounds.

At the Everest ground, Georgetown secured a comprehensive 103-run victory over East Coast Demerara. The city lads took first strike and mustered a challenging 167 all out in 44.3 overs. D. Solomon 56, D. Fernandes 30 and Andrew Stoll 27 led the way for Georgetown. Amir Mohamed, Royston Simond and Kamesh Yadram snared two wickets each for East Coast.

East Coast were in turn bundled out for 64 in 29.2 overs with Brian Sattur (30) the only East Coast batsman to get among the runs. Current West Indies Under-15 player Amir Khan and former national Under-15 player Seon Daniels both grabbed 3 wickets for 13 and 27 runs respectively.

At the Wales Community Development ground, East Bank, propelled by a solid all-round performance from Shameer Fazal, managed an 11-run victory in a match reduced to 20 overs a side due to overnight rain which left a wet outfield.

East Bank managed a meagre 80-4 of their 20 overs but the score was to prove sufficient. Shameer Fazal 26 and Khemraj Singh 25 were the top scorers in East Bank's total.

Amir Khan 3-11 led the West Demerara bowling. Their batsmen however folded for 69 in 19.2 overs with Kelvin Bennett (29 not out) the only one to get among the runs. The West Demerara team did not aid their own cause, with run-outs accounting for six of their batsmen. Shameer Fazal returned to snare 2-7 to lead his side to an opening victory.

Meanwhile, president of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB), Bissoondial Singh, is calling on more business entities to sponsor local cricket. At the opening of the DCB Inter-Association Under-17 50-over competition at the Everest Cricket Club ground Singh noted that cricket is at a difficult crossroads with sponsorship difficult to come by.

This year Gizmos and Gadgets and Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company have teamed up to sponsor the Demerara Cricket Board Under-17 50-over competition. Singh informed that sponsors are looking to have returns from their investment and as such congratulated the companies for their sponsorship.

Ravi Mangar, owner of Gizmos and Gadgets, said that his company is proud to be associated with the tournament and although it's their first time they will continue to sponsor cricket in the future.

Marketing Manager of the DCB Ravindra Prashad also revealed that other corporate entities (namely In Flight Duty Free Guyana and New Line Aqua Farm) have pledged support to the tournament but loose ends are still being tied up.

Georgetown continue on winning path
GEORGETOWN continued along a winning path in the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Inter-Association Under-17 50 Overs competition with a nine-wicket thrashing of West Demerara at the Everest Cricket Club ground yesterday.

West Demerara took first strike and were bundled out for 84 in 30.2 overs with Medha Dhanpaul (24) the only batsman to get into double figures.

Seon Daniels (3-16), Andre Stoll (2-23) and Ricardo Devers (2-19) did the damage for the Georgetown lads.

In reply Georgetown coasted to 85-1 in 21.1 overs, compliments of an opening stand of 75 between Quincy Ovid (40) and Kamal Ramkissoon (19 not out).

Today West Demerara take on East Coast while East Bank take on Georgetown.

CLICO sponsors U-17 Inter-county Cricket
THE spirit of generosity was once again felt by the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) from regional insurance superpower CLICO yesterday. The company unveiled its sponsorship plan for the CLICO U-17 Inter-county cricket scheduled to begin on September 6.

The company's Sales and Marketing Manager, Venita Bovell, handed over a cheque totalling $1.3 million to Guyana Cricket Board president, Chetram Singh yesterday at the company's head office. Bovell highlighted CLICO's dedication to the game so many adore and the search for the next outstanding West Indian cricketer.

CLICO's sponsorship will ensure the three teams from Demerara, Berbice and Essequibo get the chance to vie for the CLICO U-17 Trophy.

The sponsorship will offset various expenses related to the three teams and the execution of the matches. The public will also get a chance to benefit from promotions that the company will be embarking on.

The competition will also be played at various venues around the country including Enterprise, Wales and Albion. "Our aim is to spread more excitement to more areas, rather than have one venue for all the matches," said the marketing manager.

"We were disappointed by the attendance at last year's competition, as well as our International U-15 Championship" expressed Bovell. "We urge all cricket fans in the selected areas to support these future champions."

GCB boss Chetram Singh, lauded CLICO's continued support for cricket and other sporting disciplines in Guyana.

CLICO has been sponsoring cricket since 2003 when the company sponsored a 40-over round-robin competition for 26 teams on the East Bank of Demerara. He also hopes that this competition will be a good yardstick for selection to field the best team in December for the Regional U-17 Championships.

Singh also posited that CLICO's contribution to the cricketing community at home and throughout the region has been outstanding. He noted therefore the sponsoring of the U-17 competition "forms the pivotal gap between the U-15 and the U-19 leagues".

The U-17 two-day Inter-county competition will begin on September 6 with Essequibo coming up against Demerara at Enterprise.

The competition is entirely free for members of the public, and cricket fans will receive special tokens at every match.

Good luck to these youths Solomon is a mature beyond his age and as a batsman should do well he is also a good keeper, Fazal Khan is East Bank's best batsman and also a good prospect, I noticed he has been bowling but my recolection is that his action is very questionable.
Dayanand Roopnarine is a very stylish righthand bat with promise Kwame Crosse should also do well with the willow he  s a dedicated cricketer who works hard at his cricket as are both Habib and Ramkissoon.
The quickies Daniels and Stoll  are both tall strapping young men with excellent potential good to see Stoll among the runs that is a improvement.
The two main spinners Ricardo Devers off spin and Amir Khan leg break/googly are also both excellent youg prospects with fathers who were good spinners.
Dellon Fernandes as a standby is a surprise he has either slipped or somebody has improved to bump him down

Simple Nawab ................. a multifaceted approach is neccessary
Upgrade the grounds in all three counties, eight top level grounds are are  needed nation wide. Then start a semi-pro league that is about the level of AA minor league baseball.
Create a cricket  academy or center of excellence complete with indoor facility similiar to the one in Couva in TnT
Build two more all weather facilities in Demerara (that is assuming the one at GNIC is functioning properly), as well as three in Berbice and two in Essequibo.
Revive interschool cricket providing coaches and managers where neccessary, train young interested students in sports journalism allowing hem to report on their schools progress.
Select and employ a top level head coach to run a developmental programme it has to be somebody that will command respect, Roger Harper comes to mind.
Utilise the coaches that were trained with the Stanford money( that was a good program.that needs to be restarted ) about twenty coaches nationwide under the direction of the national headcoach would be ideal.
This would cost about 5m usd for the new infrastructure and intial salary outlays, the goal would be to televise most of the league matches, in order to sustain this enterprise using sponsorship money.
Use marketing strategies similiar to AA minor baseball to promote the sport.

Hmmm....funny thought just occurred - what would it be like to see an inter-county competition between the Guyanese counties (Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice) and Jamaican counties (Surrey, Cornwall and Middlesex)?

Good ideas there. And each has the potential to link in with similar approaches applied in the rest of the WI, so a WI-wide school competition and a competition between the winners of the semi-pro leagues (AA minor league baseball equivalent) and hopefully a fully-pro league throughout the region.

By the way, anyone found any good cricket news coming out of T&T, Barbados, Leewards, etc?
