Cricket : Switch Hitting

Under the laws of the game this move move is perfectly legal :

even though a bowler must tell the umpire if he is bowling with a different hand

or switching between over and around the wicket.

Similarly, a fieldsman cannot deceive the batsman by significantly changing

his position as the bowler runs in......

In the third over of Wednesday's Twenty20 against India,

the left-hander Warner changed his batting stance as R Ashwin was releasing a delivery,

and he muscled an enormous six.....with a right-handed grip

over what would have been deep extra cover............ ::redcard::

Switch-hitting has been an issue in the past :

Kevin Pietersen mastered the stroke and said that he felt it was such a high-risk shot

that bowlers were not disadvantaged  ::rolleyes::

Warner practised the shot regularly in the nets and that he could become a

pioneer of the style, and there was no reason the stroke

should not be allowed in Test cricket as well  :lipsrsealed:

As opposed to the reverse-sweep :

often played with the hands still in their starting position on the handle of the bat,

switch-hit involves a complete change of stance and hand position.

When Ashwin ran in, Warner was a left-hand batsman, but as he released the ball,

the batsman had become a right-hander......

A Bowler cannot switch to " over " / " around " without Ump advising the Batsman !

A fielder cannot change position during a Delivery ..

That action was not called by the Ump....

A single incident in an otherwise utterly forgettable one-day international

in February 1981 remains, to this day,

one of the most infamous sporting moments of all time.

Thirty years on, the last-ball underarm delivery in the match between

Australia and New Zealand at the MCG remains a scar on the reputation of

Greg and Trevor Chappell ...

and a classic example of an issue that fell within the strict rules of the game :

but way outside the moral ones.

With New Zealand needing six to tie

from the final delivery of the game, Chappell, Australia's captain, instructed his brother,

Trevor, to bowl an underarm delivery along the ground  to prevent tailender

Brian McKechnie hitting it into the stands.

Greg Chappell said he was not aware of quite how badly his decision would go down

until he was walking off.

One little girl ran beside me and tugged on my sleeve and said :

" You cheated  ".

"That was when I knew it would be bigger than I expected."

Ketchim,
I have a philosophical view on these things as they tend to evolve the game in some way as did bodyline, Packer, gambling etc.

I recall seeing the TC incident and could not believe it was actually happening but cannot remember how many times the ball bounced as it is meant to do bounce a maximum 2 times before getting to the batsman for it to be a legal delivery.

With respect to switch hitting, I did not see a problem with this but I think it is quite unjust as the bowler has set the field for a certain type of batsman and as you mentioned fielders have protocols to follow and the bowler cannot suddenly to change his action.

It is an attractive and skillful feature but it does not seem fair. It is not Cricket as one might say.

Apparently from what the comms said during this Switch Hit :

He was a Right Handed Batsman until Age 12 years.

Then he switched to becoming a Left Handed Bat ...
